Finnish Winter – Spring Is Coming, but the Slush Situation Isn’t Helping
Finnish winter is like that one friend who can’t decide whether to stay at the party or go home. In December, we’re all still feeling the magic—snow-covered landscapes, twinkling lights, and the socially acceptable excuse to wrap ourselves in blankets all day. But then comes never-ending March, where spring kind of promises to show up, but at the same time, it dumps ankle-deep slush water on your shoes just to mess with you.
Spring Might Be on Its Way, but Why Are My Feet Always Wet?
That moment when the sun finally starts peeking out and birds are chirping could be beautiful. But what does Finnish weather do? It gives us ten minutes of spring, followed by a slush storm just to remind us that winter isn’t going down without a fight.
And then there’s the slush. The slush. It’s not quite water, not quite snow—it’s some kind of existential, in-between state that seeps into your shoes, socks, and soul. Every year, I try to convince myself that my winter boots are not leaking, yet 30 seconds outside, and my toes are wetter than a Finn attempting small talk.
Choosing a Jacket = The Ultimate Finnish Struggle
At this point in the season, picking the right jacket is a nightmare. If you wear your winter coat, you’ll be sweating like a sausage on a midsummer grill. But if you go for something lighter, the weather will immediately hit you with a snowstorm. And let’s not even talk about that one time in early March when the sun is shining, and you boldly decide to wear sneakers—only to be peeling them off in the evening, drenched and covered in mud, questioning every decision you’ve ever made.
Spring Fever? More Like Allergy Season & Forgotten Sunglasses
At some point, we’ll notice that the sun has actually returned, but we’ve spent the past months living in total darkness like moles. The first rays of sunlight blind us harder than New Year’s fireworks, because who even remembers where they last left their sunglasses?
But hey, even though the slush is miserable and spring always feels like it’s running late, it does show up eventually. And soon, we can enjoy the last remains of winter still clinging to shady parking lots in June.
So, let’s hold on, survive the slush phase, and remember that somewhere behind this muddy, gray mess, real spring is waiting.
